What Happens Before Asbestos Removal
When having asbestos removed from your home, there are a series of tasks that are accomplished before any work is done. Usually, an asbestos abatement company will pre-clean the work area and ensure everything is ready to go, but it doesn’t hurt to know what they’ll be doing, and find out if you can help in any way.
If you’ve contracted an asbestos abatement company to remove the dangerous fibers from your home or commercial building, they’ll have all of the necessary equipment, like plastic sheeting, duct tape, warning notices, barricades, a solid asbestos waste container, waste bags, and more. They might even ask you for access to a garden hose.
When inspecting and testing the area, the asbestos removal technicians will craft a removal control plan, where specific methods and processes will be outlined to ensure the removal is safe and successful. This control plan is required for licensed asbestos removal work, and it will typically include the following information:
- How removal will be carried out
- The methods that will be used during the removal
- The tools, equipment, and PPE that will be used
- The location of the asbestos
- The type of asbestos
- The condition of the asbestos
Work Area Preparations For Asbestos Removal
The work area will also be prepared so asbestos can be removed safely. The removal team will put up signs and barriers to ensure people avoid the area and isolate the contamination site. The removal professionals will cover all vents and turn off HVAC systems, seal openings with plastic sheeting and duct tape and install a new electrical system specifically for the abatement where negative air pressure units will work to avoid contamination outside of the work area.
It’s also best to clear the area of all personal belongings, loose items, soft furnishings, and anything else that could be in the way and possibly be contaminated with asbestos. If there are items that you can’t move, like appliances, and mechanical equipment, the asbestos removal technicians will cover and seal the items with a 6-mil polyethylene sheet.
