The Project File: Chicago Popcorn Ceiling Removal
Textured or “popcorn” ceilings were all the design rage back in the 1960s and 1970s. Not surprisingly, much of the material used to create that instantly recognizable textured look contained asbestos. The passage of the Clean Air Act meant that asbestos could no longer be used in creating textured ceilings or walls; however, they still remain today in countless homes across the Chicago area.
We were recently called to a home in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood to remove a popcorn ceiling. As you can see from the photos below this ceiling covered most of the home’s main living area, which left a fairly wide-open area for our team to work.
The Popcorn Ceiling Removal Process
The first step in our process was to seal off the living area from the rest of the home with 6mm plastic. We then ensured all HVAC systems were turned off. This contains harmful spores within the work area and does not spread to the rest of the home.
Next, we installed an industrial-strength HEPA exhaust system, creating negative pressure inside the work area, and vented that air to the outside through a carefully sealed ventilation window.
Our team of asbestos removal professionals then suited up and began the process of carefully removing all the texturing from the ceiling.
The asbestos removal waste was then wrapped and sealed in double 6mm polyurethane bags and then placed in 55-gallon sealed fiber drums. Next we HEPA vacuumed and wet wiped the ceiling with amended water. We then hauled and disposed of the material in compliance with all Federal, State, and Municipal rules and regulations.
Finally, clearance air sampling was performed by an I.D.P.H. licensed air sampling professional and air samples will be analyzed by a third-party laboratory.
