The Project File: River Forest Asbestos Removal
The asbestos removal team at Asbestos Project Management was called recently by River Forest homeowners to remove fairly common asbestos tiles from their home’s basement.
After we confirmed the 9-inch by 9-inch tiles indeed contained asbestos, we also determined the adhesive used stick the tile to the subfloor also contained asbestos. Finding both the tile and adhesive containing asbestos is common and removing both at the same time something we do often.
The Asbestos Removal Process
The first step in our process, as always was to seal the basement from the rest of the home with 6mm plastic sheeting. We then switched off HVAC systems to prevent contamination to the rest of the home during the asbestos removal process.
Next, our team installed a HEPA exhaust system, which creates negative pressure from inside the work area. This exhaust system is vented outside through a carefully sealed basement window opening.
The team then dressed in our protective gear and began the process of carefully removing the tile and adhesive from the concrete basement floor using the wet gross removal method. We placed all the dangerous materials in wrapped and sealed in double 6mm polyurethane bags.
Those bags were then placed in 55-gallon sealed fiber drums from proper disposal. The hauling and disposal of the waste were done in total compliance with all Federal, State, and local rules and regulations.
The area was then HEPA vacuumed and wet wiped with amended water and as our final step, clearance air sampling was done by an I.D.P.H. licensed air sampling professional and air samples were analyzed by an independent lab.
