The Project File: Villa Park Vermiculite Removal
There are different materials that may contain asbestos, including vermiculite. Our asbestos removal technicians ventured to Villa Park to remove asbestos-containing insulation from a home. Before any removal was done, we conducted an inspection and sealed off the area.
Once we removed the vermiculite, we replaced the insulation and ensured the area was now asbestos-free with another air sample and test.
What is Vermiculite?
Vermiculite is a mineral used in construction, insulation, and gardening products. It can still be found in insulation, especially attic insulation. It’s lightweight, fire-resistant, absorbent, and usually odorless. When it’s found in insulation, it’s usually pebble-like, like small pieces of popcorn, and is a light brown or gold color.
If you have vermiculite insulation in your attic, it’s safe to assume the material may be ridden with asbestos. Asbestos is invisible to the naked eye, and can only be detected by professionals. If you’re unsure if your home’s insulation is vermiculite, it’s best to avoid touching it until it’s confirmed to be vermiculite.
While it’s recommended to not remove vermiculite if it’s in your attic, wall, or floorboards, we believe you can never be too safe and have it removed by a professional. Until you have an asbestos removal company come out, treat it like you would any other toxic fiber in your home, and don’t enter the area it’s in, don’t disturb the vermiculite. We remove the asbestos-ridden insulation, just like we would remove flooring or ceiling materials with asbestos.
