As the sixth largest city in Illinois, with a population of over 114,000 residents, Elgin is just 35 miles northwest of Chicago. Located on the banks of the Fox River in both Cook and Kane Counties, Elgin has a rich history behind it. The suburban town was founded in 1835, after the Indian Removal Act of 1830, and the Black Hawk Indian War, however the town wasn’t incorporated until 1854.
Elgin was originally known for its butter and dairy products that were sold to the city of Chicago. However, when the Elgin Watch Company arrived, the dairy industry trailed off. Elgin has a long history of education and invention, and many notable people have called Elgin home.
The town has grown a lot since its early days, and now is home too many small and medium sized businesses, and families. The suburban city has many shopping plazas, community events, recreational activities and more that residents love to take advantage of.
