Wheaton is a community with a long history. First settled in 1837 by brothers Jesse and Warren Wheaton and later incorporated in 1859, Wheaton became the home of DuPage County government in 1868 after two referendum votes that moved the county seat from Naperville.

As county records were transferred from Naperville to Wheaton, Civil War veterans from Naperville staged a midnight raid and seized many of the important records. The records were then transported moved to Chicago for safekeeping, and were later destroyed in the Chicago Fire of 1871. After a long court battle, Wheaton was finally declared the county seat that same year.

Today, Wheaton is home to about 53,000 residents, and in 2018 was ranked as the No. 1 best place to live in Illinois by Money Magazine.
