Removing asbestos is often preferred over encapsulation because encapsulation, or sealing the asbestos-containing material, may not provide a long-term solution. Asbestos can deteriorate over time, potentially leading to the release of harmful fibers, even if encapsulated. Full removal ensures the elimination of asbestos hazards, safeguarding your health and preventing future issues that might arise from encapsulated materials degrading or becoming damaged. It also may end up costing you more since most encapsulation will eventually require you to remove the asbestos materials.
First, the work area will be prepared so asbestos can be removed safely. Signs and barriers will be set in place to ensure people avoid the area and isolate the contamination site. The removal professionals will cover all vents and turn off HVAC systems, seal openings with plastic sheeting and duct tape, and install a new electrical system specifically for the abatement where negative air pressure units will work to avoid contamination outside of the work area. Each project is different so the cost of asbestos removal varies. To get a free asbestos estimate, please contact our team!
Unfortunately, in our experience, the vast majority of homeowners insurance policies do not cover the cost of asbestos inspection and removal. Most policies have an exclusion for pollution, which prevents you from being reimbursed for cleaning up pollutants, including asbestos. The cost for removal of asbestos floor tiles in a basement depends on a number of factors, such as:
Yes! APM makes it easy for you to test materials for asbestos. Just request one of our at-home asbestos testing kits. All at-home asbestos test kits are sent to a certified laboratory for results.
Testing for asbestos typically involves hiring a certified asbestos inspector or ordering an at-home asbestos test kit to collect samples of suspected materials. These samples are then analyzed under a microscope to determine the presence of asbestos fibers. It’s crucial to rely on certified professionals like APM who have the expertise and equipment to conduct accurate asbestos testing and ensure your safety.
Whether your floor tiles contain asbestos depends on the age and the size of the tiles. Floor tiles installed in homes and buildings prior to 1970 may contain asbestos. In addition to age, another conventional indicator of possible asbestos content is the dimension of the tiles. Specifically, tiles that are 9” x 9” in size almost always contain asbestos. 12” x 12” Floor tiles have also been known to contain asbestos. When in doubt, get an asbestos test from APM!
Typically results are available within 48 hours. Expedited services are also available for rush cases.
By using our at-home asbestos testing kit, you can package and mail your sample according to the kit instructions to a certified laboratory that will provide asbestos test results within 1-2 days by email.
APM’s at-home asbestos test kit is a good option because it’s fast, affordable, and reliable. At-home asbestos testing kits allow you to get results in less than half the time of a traditional asbestos inspection.
Any homes built before 1980 could possibly have Asbestos Containing Materials inside.
To determine whether asbestos is present in a particular building material, a sample of the material must be properly collected by an Illinois Department of Public Health-licensed Asbestos Inspector and analyzed at an NVLAP-accredited laboratory. APM is licensed to collect samples but also offers at-home asbestos testing kit. Cost is $75 for the first sample and $25 for each additional sample. Pricing on asbestos testing varies, depending on the testing service you choose. Contact our team for other pricing info.
Typically results are available within 48 hours. Expedited services are also available.
Any asbestos-containing material can be extremely dangerous to your health. If the material is disturbed, and over time in general, dangerous asbestos fibers can be released into the air. If asbestos is undisturbed it is likely not endangering the inhabitants but you should contact an experienced asbestos service provider like APM right away to perform an asbestos inspection or asbestos test.
Old popcorn ceilings often contain asbestos, but there is no way to know for sure by simply looking at it. To determine if there is asbestos in a popcorn ceiling you must perform an asbestos test.
Asbestos flooring can come in many different styles. Asbestos floor tiles were unfortunately quite common and it can be difficult to identify them. We cover this more in our blog, “How to Identify Asbestos Flooring.” If you suspect asbestos flooring then the best course of action is to perform an asbestos test.
Asbestos ceilings were quite common in the past. Asbestos popcorn ceilings, asbestos ceiling tiles, and other ceilings with asbestos can pose a risk to your health. To determine whether your ceiling has asbestos you will need an asbestos test. You can rely on our APM at-home asbestos test kit or our other asbestos testing service.
Asbestos materials that are commonly found in homes include asbestos floor tiles, asbestos ceilings (often in the form of textured or “popcorn” ceilings), asbestos siding, and asbestos insulation. It’s essential to exercise caution when dealing with these materials, as they can pose health risks if disturbed or damaged, releasing asbestos fibers into the air.
Exposure to airborne asbestos fibers can be extremely hazardous to human health, potentially leading to lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis, which is why its use is heavily regulated and controlled in many countries.
Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals known for their heat and fire-resistant properties. Asbestos was frequently used in low-cost building materials in the US until it was banned in the 1980s.

The EPA highly advises that you do not remove asbestos yourself. While no current federal regulations prohibit removing asbestos materials yourself, this does not mean that you can or should remove it yourself. Local and state regulations regarding asbestos removal vary, so be sure to check your local laws and regulations.
This depends on the level of asbestos abatement required. If only a specific section or room of the house needs removal it may be safe for you to stay. This is determined on a case-by-case basis.
If the owner is aware of asbestos then it must be disclosed, however, the owner may be unaware of asbestos materials. While most home sales now include an asbestos inspection, as a buyer or realtor you should ensure one takes place. APM works closely with realtors and homeowners to provide real estate asbestos services.
