Removing asbestos is often preferred over encapsulation because encapsulation, or sealing the asbestos-containing material, may not provide a long-term solution. Asbestos can deteriorate over time, potentially leading to the release of harmful fibers, even if encapsulated. Full removal ensures the elimination of asbestos hazards, safeguarding your health and preventing future issues that might arise from encapsulated materials degrading or becoming damaged. It also may end up costing you more since most encapsulation will eventually require you to remove the asbestos materials.

First, the work area will be prepared so asbestos can be removed safely. Signs and barriers will be set in place to ensure people avoid the area and isolate the contamination site. Unfortunately, in our experience, the vast majority of homeowners insurance policies do not cover the cost of asbestos inspection and removal. The cost for removal of asbestos floor tiles in a basement depends on a number of factors, such as:

• The location of the home or building requiring the removal work: Many municipalities require a project permit (and associated fees) for asbestos projects
• Whether asbestos-containing adhesive (mastic) is present in the work area

Testing for asbestos typically involves hiring a certified asbestos inspector or ordering an at-home asbestos test kit to collect samples of suspected materials. These samples are then analyzed under a microscope to determine the presence of asbestos fibers. It’s crucial to rely on certified professionals like APM who have the expertise and equipment to conduct accurate asbestos testing and ensure your safety.

Whether your floor tiles contain asbestos depends on the age and the size of the tiles. Floor tiles installed in homes and buildings prior to 1970 may contain asbestos. In addition to age, another conventional indicator of possible asbestos content is the dimension of the tiles. Specifically, tiles that are 9” x 9” in size almost always contain asbestos. 12” x 12” Floor tiles have also been known to contain asbestos. When in doubt, get an asbestos test from APM!

To determine whether asbestos is present in a particular building material, a sample of the material must be properly collected by an Illinois Department of Public Health-licensed Asbestos Inspector and analyzed at an NVLAP-accredited laboratory. Old popcorn ceilings often contain asbestos, but there is no way to know for sure by simply looking at it. To determine if there is asbestos in a popcorn ceiling you must perform an asbestos test.
