Cook County is the most populous county in Illinois and the second-most populous county in the United States after Los Angeles County, California. More than 40% of Illinois residents live within Cook County, which includes the major city of Chicago.
In 1831 Cook County was incorporated. The county gets its namesake from Daniel Pope Cook, one of the early statesmen from Illinois. The county has always boasted a majority of the state’s residents and continues to be one of the largest in the country. It’s county seat is located in the City of Chicago, but the county itself includes many other towns, villages and cities. Including, Elgin, Palatine, Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, and Des Plains.
In terms of land area Cook County is the 6th largest in the state of Illinois. One of its notable geographic features is the beautiful shoreline it shares with Lake Michigan. This easy access to the Great Lakes allowed the State of Illinois and Cook County to grow rapidly from the easy access to transportation. Early efforts included the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1848, which firmly established the region as one of the nation’s central transit hubs. With access to the St. Lawrence Seaway via the Great lakes the city of Chicago was a global port, granting Cook County an international shipping port.
Because of the advantages of it’s geographic locations the city of Chicago and Cook County has continued to boom. It’s current population is greater than that of 28 different U.S. states and territories.
